This web page is intended to answer frequently asked questions about phone services which depend upon your Frazier Mountain Internet High Speed Wireless or DSL services.
Internet Phone services are commonly called VOIP or Voice over IP services. These types of services use your internet connection to convert phone conversation to data packets which are transported over the Internet. They commonly have the advantage in being able to make long distance calls much less expensively than using standard phone services (POTS service, or Plan Old Telephone Service).
Popular examples of VOIP services include Vonage, Skype, Magic Jack, AT&T Microcell , and Verizon Network Extender. There are many other services which can use VOIP.
Will VOIP services work well with my Frazier Mountain Internet
High Speed DSL Service?
Most VOIP services should work quite well with our DSL service. Frazier
Mountain Internet Service currently offers DSL service in Frazier Park,
most of Lake of the Woods, and parts of Lebec.
Can I disconnect my regular phone line if I use VOIP services
with Frazier Mountain Internet High Speed DSL Service?
Our High Speed DSL service requires you to have a phone line to connect
the DSL modem. If you disconnect the phone line which we use to provide
DSL service to you, your DSL service will stop working. If you disconnect
other phone lines (phone lines not used to provide DSL service),
your DSL service will continue to work. Before you place any order to disconnect
your phone line we highly recommend you contact us at 661-242-5500
x91 to verify that disconnecting the phone line will not affect your DSL
service.
Will VOIP services work well with my Frazier Mountain Internet
High Speed Wireless Service?
Our High Speed Wireless Services uses various wireless equipment that
is not optimized for VOIP services. As such, it does not attempt to prioritize
VOIP packets over other data packets. For this reason, VOIP services do
not always work well with our High Speed Wireless service. In general,
most VOIP services will work well at times, and may have other times
when voice quality will not be good. Some of our wireless access points
(the equipment on our end of the connection) provide better VOIP service,
and some will typically be less optimal. To find out if the access point
to which your house is connected is capable of providing good quality VOIP service,
please call us at 242-5500 x91.
Frazier Mountain Internet Service currently offers High Speed Wireless service in Pine Mountain Club, Cuddy Valley, Pinon Pines, Lockwood Valley, and certain areas in Lebec.
Can I disconnect my regular phone line if I use VOIP services
with Frazier Mountain Internet High Speed Wireless Service?
Your High Speed Wireless Service will continue to work if you disconnect
your phone line. However, we strongly discourage our customers from
disconnecting their phone line if they do not have any other source of
phone service that does NOT depend upon internet service at their location
(cell phone service, additional phone line at the house, etc.). One of
the big problems that customers have had when they subscribe to VOIP services
and drop their land line service is that if there are any problems with
their internet service, they have no way to contact us. We can solve well
over 98% of the problems that customers have with their internet service
via a phone call. However, when the customer doesn't have a phone (because
they only have VOIP service), we can't help them over the phone. Consequently,
we generally have no choice but to make an on site service call when they
have ANY kind of problem with their internet service.
We can do this, but we DO charge for these service calls ($50 for most service calls). The only time we do not charge for these calls is if we could not have solved the problem over the phone. Additionally, we are not always available immediately. Accordingly, you may be out of phone service until we were available to come out and look at the problem.
